2 And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.
3 And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.
4 And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness.
5 And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.
1 In principio creavit Deus cælum et terram.
2 Terra autem erat inanis et vacua, et tenebræ erant super faciem abyssi: et spiritus Dei ferebatur super aquas.
3 Dixitque Deus: Fiat lux. Et facta est lux.
4 Et vidit Deus lucem quod esset bona: et divisit lucem a tenebris.
5 Appellavitque lucem Diem, et tenebras Noctem: factumque est vespere et mane, dies unus.

We begin here. We will dissect the verses so that we may enhance our knowledge. Bible passages will be supplied in English (Douay-Rheims) and Latin (Clementine Vulgate Project).
1. Before we were all created, before you and I or anyone or anything was even allowed to breathe, roam, or exist as a being, a unit of matter, or even an atom such as H (Hydrogen), God existed. He was all there is. Hard to imagine? Very much, but lets not loose faith. If he is the almighty and the all powerful, it is not hard to fathom. In latin the words caelam and terram both mean "sky; heaven" and "earth; ground; land; country" respectively. So just imagine, the Presence of God and nothing else. Emptiness (if that even existed) and the Lord Almighty...and one day, just like that, BAM! heaven and earth are created.
2. The earth did not have a form. It was just some mass. Until God decided to shape it. It was also empty and useless hence the word void. Darkness existed over the earth as well. The earth was shapeless, useless, lacking purpose, and dark. God (which is the trinity : Father, Son, Holy Spirit) moved over the surface of the sea. As it is written "darkness was upon the face of the deep," that signifies the complete lack of light, purpose, and meaning the world had. The deepness of darkness is a strong description. Imagine the darkest room or place you can find, then just imagine that room or place growing until it is the size of your house, then the size of your neighborhood, then the size of your town until you envision it the size of the entire world. That is how dark and lonely the world was.
3. God's power was displayed step through step in a very prganized and unique order. He made heaven and earth and then decided to make light. All it took from him was to say the word and there it was. This is the first sentence God has spoken. None of us were alive to hear it, but through the spirit that educates us and gives us wisdom, aside from our brain, this story was handed down to His believers and jotted down. "Let there be light!" is very literal in the sense God created the Sun, or digging deeper into the word we can see and thus say that God created hope. In all that darkness he had already existed as the Hope for us, but by making light we can have another view of it as well. Light in the face of darkness, if we think about it metaphorically we can see that our light, our inner strength which is given to us through God, can overcome any darkness the world throws at us. Any darkness that tries to capture us. Let us not forget that a single ray or presence of light can shine an entire room of darkness.
4. Now, this line which is extremely important to us all. God mentioned that Light was good. He actually took a glance at it before he could actually say it was good. Do you remember Him saying the earth was good? No. We must always remember that. The only good thing the Lord has mentioned so far is the creation of Light. Afterwards he divided the Light from Darkness. It is safe to say here that Light is good, and Darkness is bad, very bad indeed (spiritually). When we think about the physical world we do acknowledge that there will be some darkness that helps, for instance, we rest in the dark, our body recuperates and re-energizes. But what happens when we have too much of it. If we never see light, our body will not function the way it should. Our body will become lazy, will loose motivation, etc. It is tested scientifically, seen both physically and spiritually. We produce a hormone known as melatonin which is excreted in larger amounts as long as there is the presence of darkness or "night." During the day we do not excrete as much. Do you ever wonder why at night we become sleepy? Melatonin in our body.
5. Very simple. God called the light Day, and the dark Night. Just like any story in the world, even our own peronal life. We will encounter a day and night. A life and darkness. How we handle it is a different story.
